Regardless of the state of the economy or the ever tightening belts of employers, we have more healthcare options today than ever before. More options means more decisions and choosing the best healthcare plan for you or you and your family can be overwhelming at best. Whether you are choosing between employer provided coverage, private pay coverage, or Medicare coverage options, many factors should be considered before making a decision. Consider the following:

How much is the monthly premium?
What are the co-pays, co-insurance and deductibles?
Can you choose your own healthcare provider or do you choose from a list of approved providers?
Does the plan cover your specific needs such as specialists, vision, dental or chiropractic.
Do you need prescription drugs coverage?
Does the plan cover pre-existing conditions or is there a waiting period? If so, how long?
Do you need a referral for services other than your primary care physician?
How often do you need to see your doctor? Just for your annual physical or regularly to monitor an illness or condition?
Are you interested in preventative benefits such as gym memberships and weight loss plans?

To answer those questions, you need a basic understanding of healthcare insurance acronyms and jargon.

A premium is the amount you or you and your employer pay, usually monthly, to purchase the health insurance.

A co-pay is the amount you must pay for each service at the time of service, including prescription drugs. Co-pays can differ depending on the service. Specialist visits usually have a higher co-pay than visits with your primary care physician.

Co-insurance is a percentage of charges you pay when receiving covered services.

A deductible is the amount you have to pay before the insurance “plan” begins to pay. Deductibles vary widely, from no deductible to $5,000 or more.

Out-of-pocket-maximum is the total amount of co-pays and co-insurance that you for a prescribed period. After that period, the health insurance plan pays all expenses.

HMOs (Health Maintenance Organization) usually give you more bang for your buck. HMOs offer a higher level of care, a greater number of covered services, and lower out-of-pocket expenses than other health insurance choices. On the downside, all care and services must be within the HMO network of doctors, clinics and hospitals.

A PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) gives members the option of choosing a doctor or services in-network and paying a smaller fee or choosing an out-of-network doctor or services and paying a higher fee. Referrals for specialists are usually not required.

Advantage Plan refers to a non-traditional Medicare plan similar to an HMO. Although you lose some freedom of choice, you are rewarded with lower fees and expenses.

A pre-existing condition is any medical condition you have or had before your insurance takes effect. Recent laws require healthcare insurers to cover pre-existing conditions, but there may be a waiting period of up to 12 months. This means you pay for all medical expenses related to your pre-existing condition (such as diabetes or hypertension) during the waiting period while still paying the monthly premium.

The best health insurance plan for you is one that gives you the most benefits for the lowest cost, the most flexibility and fits your individual or family’s needs.

Health care costs have skyrocketed in recent years, and many families are struggling to pay their medical bills. Going without medical care can lead to further health complications and can even put your life in jeopardy. Medical care is truly a necessity, but there are ways that you can reduce your health care spending. Here are a few ways to cut back on medical care costs without sacrificing your family’s health and well-being.

Get Plenty Of Exercise

First of all, you should make sure that every member of your family is getting adequate exercise. Regular exercise reduces an individual’s risk of developing chronic health conditions. The healthier your family is, the less you will need to spend on medical care. If your family is reluctant to start working out, plan some active fun for the whole family. If possible, encourage your children to participate in school or community sports. Even a walk around the block can help your family’s health, so do whatever you can to get your family moving.

Eat Healthy Food

Another way to cut back on medical spending is to eat healthy food. Obesity, which is often caused by a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle, can lead to additional health complications, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Both of these conditions require expensive and ongoing treatment. Eating a healthy diet can help keep you and your family in good health. If you do not know how to prepare healthy meals, take time to do some research. You can borrow cookbooks from your local library or take a community cooking class. Learning how to cook takes time, but soon you will be able to serve your family food that is both delicious and healthy.

Save On Your Family’s Insurance Plan

Although medical insurance can be expensive, it is important that your family have at least a catastrophic insurance policy. If a family member ever has a medical emergency and is uninsured, you might not be able to pay your family’s medical bills. It is not unheard of for families to declare bankruptcy due to high medical debts. A medical insurance policy can protect your family financially in the event of an illness or injury. You can save on your family’s insurance plan by comparing rates from different providers. Additionally, find out if you qualify for health insurance coverage through your employer or your school. Employer subsidized health insurance is usually cheaper than a private plan. You should also find out if your state offers any public health insurance options, and these are often the cheapest option available for struggling families.

Switch To Generic Prescriptions

Monthly prescriptions can be quite expensive. If possible, switch to a generic medication. Generic medications are identical to their name brand counterparts in everything except packaging and advertising. When you switch to generic pills, you will be able to get the medication you need for a fraction of the price. Talk to your doctor during your next appointment about your generic prescription options.

Avoid The Emergency Room If Possible

If you are ever seriously injured, you should not hesitate to rush to the emergency room of your local hospital. However, not every medical issue requires a trip to the emergency room. Instead, visit a local urgent care clinic in your area. These medical centers do not require an appointment and charge much lower rates than hospitals. You will still get the medical care you need without needing to spend thousands of dollars for an emergency room visit. Follow these tips and you will be able to save money on your family’s health care expenses.

One of the biggest and most rewarding steps an adult can take is starting a relationship. The challenge in this endeavor lies in not only choosing the right partner, but also using the right tactics to keep the relationship healthy and thriving. There are plenty of different ways to find your partner now a day including websites where singles chat, organizations, or if you can, meeting someone new at bookstore or coffee shop.

Expectations are very important in any relation to another person. Romantic relationships in particular often fail because one or both parties bring unreasonably high or low expectations to the table. One person may be too focused on what the other can provide or may make the partner the center of the universe. This puts undue pressure on one party to be everything to the other and is a recipe for failure.

Conversely, one person may assume that because the last partner cheated or lied, or otherwise engaged in negative behaviors, that the new person will do the same. Having low expectations is just as damaging as having high ones.

A healthy relationship will have expectations that are within reason. Each party should accept the other for who they are and just simply enjoy each other’s company in friendship. Friendship is the basis for romance.

Communication is of utmost importance in a relationship. It involves not only talking but actively listening, as well. Good communication means learning about the other person while simultaneously teaching them about oneself.

Issues in communication arise when one or both parties lack listening skills or refuse to talk when the relationship hits a rough patch. Also, if one person requires constant contact, it can make the other person feel smothered. Being able to communicate well is a hallmark of honesty and if this factor does not exist, the relationship will not work.

Positive, open communication will build a strong foundation on which the relationship can grow.

There needs to be flexibility by both parties when they partner up. A fear of change can stifle growth and lead to a quick ending. People are individuals that are constantly evolving and changing, whether in a relationship or out of one. As individuals, people can and often do behave in ways that go outside the expectations of the partner.

It is normal to feel tension and apprehension through life’s big shifts, such as moving, having a child or starting a new job. All big events cause change and growth, and when or both parties are not flexible enough to allow for it, it can can spell disaster for the relationship.

Being open to and encouraging positive change in a partner is one of the healthiest approaches to a partnership and to life itself. It brings a feeling of acceptance and is one of the finest gifts one person can give another. It is also the glue that keeps people together.

Starting a healthy relationship may require changing patterns of thought and behavior that are inflexible and negative. Each party should think about the possible impact on the other person and adjust accordingly. The best relationships start as solid friendships, with open communication, active listening and embrace of growth.

The top 10 healthiest countries in the world include areas that have low pollution levels in the environment, an abundance of organic foods, clean drinking water, as well as safe and sanitary living conditions. These factors are responsible for increasing the number of healthy births and life expectancies. The easiest way to tell if a country is healthy is by taking a look at how many elderly citizens are still alive and healthy past 70 years old.

1. Japan

Japan is recognized for having many of the oldest living folks in the entire world. The reason behind why people are living longer in Japan is because many of its citizens include fish and seaweed in their daily diets. Fish is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids to improve hearth health, lower blood pressure, and reduce the risk of heart attacks. Its government also plays a part in helping people stay healthy by offering government exercise programs. Although the Fukushima event affected many lives, the government took action and poured zeolite into the water around the nuclear plant to absorb some of the toxins that were expelled. Zeolite is known for its ability to detoxify the body from radiation and other harmful toxins. As a result, many Japanese people have started to include zeolite in their daily diets.

2. Sweden

Sweden is recognized for being a country with the cleanest air in the world. Being able to breathe clean air that isn’t polluted is key to having a long, healthy life. Having clean air also means that toxins are not rained down onto the food crops, thereby savings its citizens from eating food that was watered by toxic rain. It is a known fact that only 3 out of 1000 pregnancies end up being stillborn. Another amazing fact is that there has only been 4 out of 100,000 people that have had tuberculosis. It also boasts of clean drinking water that doesn’t have harmful heavy metals and toxins contaminating it.

3. Iceland

Iceland is a little Scandinavian island that is located in the North Atlantic ocean and it is considered to be one of the healthiest countries in the world. Because it has virtually no pollution and its water is extremely clean, many people who are born and raised here experience a long, healthy life.

4. Switzerland

Switzerland has the second-highest health spending per capital of all the countries considered and has one of the world’s highest physician densities and longest healthy life expectancies. This system permits access to a broad range of modern medical services. However, its air pollution levels are a bit higher than the others in the top three.

5. Germany

Germany is considered to be a very healthy country because of its health care system provides its citizens with proper health care at a low cost. Another reason why Germany is a healthy country is because many Germans engage in a regular daily exercise routine to stay fit and active, rather than fat and lazy.

6. France

The reason that France is one of the healthiest countries in the world is because its healthcare system is one of the best in the world. It provides free health care for those who are affected by diseases such as Aids, cystic fibrosis, cancer, and other chronic ailments. The average life expectancy of this country is 77 years for men and 84 years for women, which happens to be one of the highest rates in the European Union. Now that the French are beginning to replace their healthy diets with junk foods, many of its citizens are becoming obese and unhealthy. Without the health care system to correct its citizen’s health problems, this would not be considered a healthy country.

7. Italy

Italy has put a ban on most indoor public smoking in places like restaurants, bars, night clubs, and offices. Smoking is only allowed in well-ventilated areas so that smokers are not imposing their unhealthy habit onto someone else. Italy also has one of the best healthcare systems in the world, making it yet another healthy country to live in. With benefits like this, you should call those Italy travel agents right now and hop on the next flight there!

8. Denmark

Denmark has been named the “happiest place in the world” according to surveys that were taken from 2006 to 2008. The main reason why Denmark is considered to be a healthy country is because of its national health service that provides its citizens with quality health care at a low price.

9. Austria

The federal government of Austria has extremely high standards of public hygiene. Just about every Austrian citizen has health insurance benefits that keep them healthy so that they can live a longer life. No one is turned down for health care, even if a person cannot afford it. The costs are paid for by a social welfare program.

10. Australia

Australia has an exceptional health care system that forces insurance companies to charge the same rates to everyone, regardless of their health status. Because the citizens have a diet that includes red meat, the country seems to have very low rates of heart disease, strokes, and high blood pressure.

In conclusion, it would seem that most of the healthy countries in the world have a great health care system that everyone can take advantage of. However, if you don’t take health care systems into consideration and only look at the environmental factors that provide a safe, clean, and toxin-free country for people to live in, it would seem that Iceland and Sweden are in the running for being known as the number one healthiest country in the world.

While everyone would like to live a longer, healthier life, when it comes to answering the question about how to become a very healthy person, most people are unable, or unwilling, to make the changes necessary to sufficiently answer the question. However, implementing a few, basic lifestyle changes can lead to the long-term benefits health conscious individuals are seeking.

Get More Sleep.

The plethora of energy drinks and supplements designed currently available to compensate for a lack of sleep is a strong indication of how many people go about their daily lives sleep deprived and completely exhausted. Sleep deprivation and overall lack of sleep lead to increased mental and physical stress, as well as reduced reaction times and decision making capability. Reduced mental functionality leads to an increased number of poor health related decisions, compounding the negative effects of sleep deprivation.

Reduce Caffeine Intake.

Caffeine is an appetite suppressant and a stimulant, both factors which lead to unhealthy eating habits and overall stress on the cardiovascular system. Additionally, the increased heart rate associated with caffeine intake can lead to increased neurological responses to normal situations creating an unusually stressful reaction to basic situations.

Smile.

Research indicates that smiling is not just an external expression of internal happiness, but that the act of smiling, independent of the internal feeling. can actually increase neurological stimulus and endorphin production, resulting in genuine feelings of joy and happiness. Pretending to be happy can actually result in actual long-term happiness.

Meditation and Reflection.

Stress becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy unless the body and mind have an opportunity to evaluate and adjust to stressful situations. Bouncing from one stressful situation to another, without allowing the body an opportunity to return to normal physiological levels leads to increased reactions to future situations. A few moments of quite time allows the body to properly adapt and establish normal composure levels.

Incorporate Exercise.

When deciding how to become a very healthy person, most individuals decide that they need an extreme of amount of exercise, rapidly introduced into their daily routine. However, after a short period of time, they return to their previous levels of inactivity. Slowly incorporating exercise into a daily schedule, by varying degrees, increases the chance of maintaining a consistent level of activity. Additionally, exercise increases overall endorphin production, which in turn leads to a more positive overall opinion of exercise and feelings of happiness.

Stay Properly Hydrated.

While scientists debate the overall amount of water an average adult should consumer on a daily basis, the fact remains that most people consume below even the most conservative estimates. Dehydration can lead to overall tiredness, lethargy, and even minor feelings of depression and negativity. Additionally, many common health ailments, such as migraines and acne, can often be directly linked to hydration levels.

While there are no shortcuts when it comes to becoming a healthier person, there are steps that can be easily taken while providing minimal disruption to daily schedules and routines. Ultimately, any change that comes, regardless of the underlying behavior, will come slowly and gradually. Attempting to rush the process, or change established habits overnight, only leads to failure.

In today’s world of billion dollar supplement companies and international health food chains, it can be difficult to find the right diet. There is so much advice floating around that the easiest thing for most people to do is exactly what they’ve been doing the whole time.

A diet is simply a meal plan that aims to improve or maintain one’s health by altering the foods they take in every day. Many people adhere to a specific diet, such as athletes, the elderly and people with medical conditions.

Here are 5 of the most popular diets:

1) Low calorie

Weight loss comes down to a simple equation: use more calories than you take in. For people looking to lose weight, a low calorie diet may be the best option.

Most people consume far too many calories, certainly more than is needed to fuel their bodies. Calories are like gasoline. They propel your body-vehicle. But if the nozzle is not controlled and too much gas is poured in, it can start to overflow, creating a dangerous situation for the driver.

Low calorie diets keep tight reins on the amount of food people can put on their plates. These diets give specific calorie levels, usually in the range of 1,250-1,500 per day. This strict measuring approach ensures that the person will not add anything extra to their body. But make sure you eat the right foods to lose weight.

2) High protein, high carbohydrate

For people who really push their bodies day-to-day, like athletes or manual labor workers, a high protein, high carbohydrate is beneficial. Their bodies require more fuel, in the form of protein, a muscle builder, and carbohydrates, a muscle energizer.

If they do not receive enough of these nutrients, their bodies will weaken, slow and fatigue. In a single day, a high protein, high carbohydrate eater will consume around 200g of protein and 300g of carbohydrates. For people on this diet, eating a lot of protein and carbohydrates isn’t a choice. It’s a professional necessity.

3) Dairy-free

A lot of people that eat dairy products are actually allergic to them. This intolerance goes unnoticed because they put so many other unhealthy things in their bodies that they cannot determine what is causing them harm and what is harmless.

A dairy-free diet is ideal for people that cannot handle lactose, a sugar found in dairy products. Dairy-free diets include lots of greens, grains, beans and fish.

4) Detox

So much of today’s food is injected with hormones, steroids and other unnatural production-agents. In order to remove these toxins from the body, people will undergo a detox diet.

Detoxes remove waste and excess from the body by introducing strict, healthy foods that help to flush out the system. A detox diet can be a shock to the system, so it should be introduced gradually and, if possible, should be designed by a professional nutritionist. Most detox diets are built on whole, raw foods like vegetables and fruits.

5) Vegetarian

A vegetarian is someone who doesn’t eat meat. It is a relatively easy diet to follow. Vegetarians boast some of the best health statistics. They tend to live longer, healthier lives than traditional meat-eaters. There are many variations of the basic vegetarian diet, but most follow the same edict: don’t eat animals.

There are as many diets out there as there are people attempting to sell them. The difficult part can be just trying to wade through the scams and misinformation. But when you do choose the right diet, it can not only make you healthier, it can make you happier as well – the truest sign of wellbeing.

Although, in many cases, the winter weather can be quite prohibitive for many of the usual summer exercise routines, staying indoors and watching television during the cold winter months will not help you to stay healthy and fit. Here are a few great tips for staying active and healthy in the winter time.

Walking in winter is a good start to help get your heart pumping and your muscles stretched. If it’s been a while since you last exercised, start out with a few stretches and a very slow pace and build up to a robust stroll. Make sure to dress warmly. It’s generally a good idea to dress in layers for a brisk winter walk. If it gets too warm under your clothes, simply remove a couple of layers and tie them around your waist.

Snow always provides a number of fun and healthy activities to help you stay fit during winter. Although they require the purchase of some equipment, snowboarding and skiing can get your heart pumping. Even the extra effort you expend while just walking through the snow can be extra good for your heart.

If you have kids, take them out to play in the snow, and have some fun while stretching your legs. Building a snowman requires all sorts of muscles, as does sledding or even hunting for treasure in the snow. If your kids are old enough, take them skiing or snowboarding with you. Ice skating at a local frozen lake or skating rink can be a fun family activity that will get you off your couch.

The cold months can give you plenty of good reasons to start up a gym routine or begin taking that fitness class that you’ve always wanted to sign up for. An indoor exercise program will keep you warm and dry while challenging your body in new ways. From dance classes to spinning to Pilates, there are plenty of activities to choose from, so pick one that you can really look forward to.

Even a good workout video from your favorite celebrity trainer can provide a solution to the nasty weather outside that is keeping you away from the jogging track. If a workout video ends up being too vigorous for your fitness level, feel free to pause it and take a short breather. Workout videos will work with your level of fitness, wherever it is currently at, to provide you with well-rounded training.

If you don’t have a workout video available, check your television to see if there is a fitness channel or go online to find an Internet workout. Even just dancing around the house to your favorite jams can help get the blood circulating through your body again.

Giving your house a good, thorough cleaning can be a great way to get the chores done while getting a good workout. It’s never too early for a good spring cleaning, and when spring finally does come around, you won’t want to be cooped up in the house. Every hour you spend doing household chores can burn as much as two hundred calories.

You can convert your gift shopping into a vigorous exercise routine if you turn up the pace a little bit when strolling around the mall. Cranking up the pace to a brisk walk can burn almost double the calories and will help you get your shopping done in record time.

No matter how cold the weather is, it’s still important to find ways to stay active in order to keep your immune system healthy and prevent your weight from skyrocketing. Have fun, and stay active.
